sending a thank-you card hours after the party;
sending a thank-you card during the party;
sending a thank-you card hours before the party;

sending a thank-you card weeks before the party is even conceived, planned, and executed, in effect acting as its own invitation. The entire process is no less baffling given that it originates in an ostensibly hopeful impulse.
